Hello! My name is Holly A. Stovall. I earned a Masters of Women’s History from Sarah Lawrence College and a PhD in Hispanic Languages and Literatures from the Graduate School and University Center, City University of New York. Western Illinois University hired me in a tenure track position in Women’s Studies, signed off on my retention file each year for 4 years, laid me off, and then, while the terms of my contract played out, conferred on me the tenure I had earned. Meanwhile, the University Professionals of Illinois filed a grievance on my behalf and eventually brought in an arbitrator to rule on my case and others.
I blog about my unresolved layoff, sexism at Western Illinois University, and the process of learning about various forms of coping with the trauma.
Thanks to Bill Thompson for my headline photo. He took it in front of a burning sculpture on summer solstice. Bill is the formidable president of the University Professionals of Illinois, Local 4100.
